La poesía de la comida
For this project we had the choice of picking a Spanish speaking country in South America, and a famous or traditional food there to research. After we chose what country and food to do, we researched the food and the background of it, and how it relates to the country's culture. We looked up our recipe's for the food we chose, and then learned how to write our recipe's in Spanish. Then, we were all introduced to the poetry of Pablo Neruda, a Spanish man who wrote odes to specific foods. We read a few of his poems and watched a movie about him to understand odes more. Then, we wrote our own odes to our food and made our food for exhibition based off of our recipe.
It was a very enjoyable project because I love to bake and cook, so when I learned that we were going to do a food project I was very excited. It was fun to make food from traditional recipe's while also learning the foods' cultural aspects. I am presently surprised with how my Horchata turned out because I had never made one before, it tasted pretty good and got good feedback from the people who drank it. I was a little nervous to write an ode, especially after reading Pablo Neruda's odes because his are very complicated and skilled. But, after writing a draft of the ode, I realized it wasn't that much of a challenge because it was made up pf simple Spanish that we've already learned.

Los Cuentos Infantiles
This project started when each student in the class chose a Spanish speaking country in South America to study and research. After choosing a country, we researched that country and its background information. After completing forms of research for our countries and getting a lot of knowledge on them, we wrote storyboards for our stories. We came up with ideas and stories to put into our books for the storyboard layouts. Then, we began writing scripts for the book and went over them and revised them several times, making sure they were presentable. We used basic Spanish that we've learned throughout this year in our scripts, while also including new vocabulary that fit with our story line. After writing scripts, we were given blank books from our teacher. We were given the freedom to write in and decorate/draw our books how we wanted to for a final product. I chose to draw all of mine out. We revised our books after they were finished and practiced reading our books in Spanish to each other to become more comfortable in our reading. Finally, we went to Needham to read to 1st graders and teach them about some Spanish from our books.
In my opinion, this project was very entertaining and for me and for the kids we read to. I loved that we had a lot of freedom to make our own art and incorporate our style of doing things into the book. My book was a small challenge for me because I decided to draw everything out in my book. I'm not the best artist so when it came to drawing, I was lacking in efficiency and neatness. Half way through the making of my book, I decided to start all the way over because I didn't think it looked presentable enough, therefore I added a bigger challenge for myself. Although it was a challenge to get it done and get it done well,I am happy with the outcome of my book. The exhibition was a nice and intriguing way for small kids to be entertained and educated at the same time and I am happy to have the opportunity to interact with them and show them my work.

Día de los Muertos Project
Project Description:
For this project, our class first was introduced to the culture of Dia de los muertos by watching videos and discussing it in class. Each student chose a specific family member to base our project off of. After that, we began creating our calacas, which in other words are small statues. They resembled our family member while also incorporating certain day of the dead styles. Then, we were handed a poema calavera worksheet to fill out, which was to help us practice to write our poem on our family member. After we finished the first worksheet, we got another one which gave us a head start on writing our poems. We typed up our poems and got them critiqued by our teacher. We mad our final touches to our calacas and calaveras, and finally presented them at exhibition. |

Project reflection:
Starting off this project, I was excited to take on something that Spanish people celebrate in the world today and incorporate some of their traditions into our work. I knew exactly which family member I was going to choose and was engaged right away. I felt really connected and involved during the entire project, which helped motivate myself to finish the final products successfully. I was proud of the outcomes of both my calaca and my poema calavera, at first I was a little nervous to create an art piece because that is not a strength of mine, but I eventually was able to work through the doubt and paint my uncle the way I pictured him in the end. Exhibition was very fun and enjoyable, it was great to have the chance to show our community and the Spanish people in our community the work we made and how we made it. The people that went were very engaged in reading my poem and loved hearing plenty of the new things I have learned this year in Spanish with Dave. |
