United States Model Senate
Model Senate was a very intriguing yet challenging project. This project allowed us to take on the role of actual senators and go through the protocol that the United States senate goes through in order to pass a bill.We were assigned a senator who was either republican or democrat, and then we were each assigned to either the debt ceiling committee or the climate change(EPW) committee. I was senior senator Richard Shelby from Alabama and was assigned to the EPW committee. The class as a whole learned the background of both issues in our country, along with what our senator and party stand by in the fiscal cliff and climate change issues. Then, we got into pairs and wrote our own legislation from our senators point of view on our presented issue. The executive branch voted on two bills that were to be used in exihbition. Lastly, we learned the protocol for parly pro and wrote speeches from our senators view to present at model senate. At exihbition, the bill from my committee did not actually pass on the senate floor, but did pass out of committee after being heavily amended.

Writing Reflection 1
Street Law Fourth Amendment Project
To begin this project we started looking at situations involving the police that had to do with the fourth amendment. We were able to identify our own definition of privacy and when it should be violated. The class learned about and defined reasonable suspicion and probable cause, how they differ from each other, and applied them to real life situations. We learned about how our rights change when we are in school and when we are in our car versus in public. We read about situations about privacy of students in school settings that were taken to the supreme court. I was taught my basic rights of the fourth amendment and what to do when I am in a situation with the police.
I struggled quite a bit with choosing a topic to do my project on. At first I was very interested in creating a project about airport security checks and how they violate the rights of people. I couldn’t figure out what to do with that idea though so I moved onto a different idea. I kept brainstorming so finally I thought of comparing rights in school versus in public and present it to the other kids at Animas so they are aware of their rights. Right away I had a great idea to present different scenarios and show the differences side by side. I took this idea and it interested me because I think it’s not only important to know your rights in public but also how they change when you are in school.
